One thing strikes me in scrolling through the page of descriptions -- the use of pencil and paper, lots of pencil and paper -- on these projects.

Once again we note that there is apparently nothing wrong with using lots of pencil and paper, if you are teaching a "constructivist" math curriculum. It's only wrong for me to use pencil and paper if I'm using it to teach a traditional "instructivist" math curriculum.

Is anyone else concerned that eighth graders are spending all of this time making tessellations and wreaths and writing detective stories as Math assignments?

And we wonder why math scores continue to drop across the country!

While trolling around tonight (having googled "My Special Number"), I came across the Connected Math Project curriculum site. One of its pages has descriptions of all of the Connected Math projects.

If you're a parent of a Connected Math kid, just starting to get concerned, a thorough perusal of just this one page would be an excellent education.

I'll be in Washington the next couple of days, but will check in as often as I can (hopefully every evening)!
