(She actually has a story about a school committee trying to vote in a constructivist math curriculum. I'll try to get it posted. She may have been in favor of the curriculum herself to start; I don't remember.) -- CatherineJohnson - 17 Oct 2005

So it's equally obvious, to me at any rate, that when Elaine McEwan set up teacher release time, nobody got to sit around talking about math being a dance. -- CatherineJohnson - 17 Oct 2005

Also, take a look at the posted pages from her 'Angry Teacher' book. It's obvious she came into a very low-performing school and knocked heads. Not only knocked heads; it's obvious she managed to fire a bunch of tenured teachers. (That's my read.) -- CatherineJohnson - 17 Oct 2005

I may have to buy this book
Here's her web site. Unfortunately she's completely focused on reading instruction. That's another obstacle in the U.S., I think; so many of our best people, at the elementary ed level, are interested in reading. (Remember the Stevenson & Stigler finding that a majority of Asian elementary ed teachers said math was their favorite subject to teach?) [UPDATE 12-4-06: wrong again. Reading comprehension in the U.S. is a mess. Not being able to read is a far worse handicap than not being able to do math.] <!--
