Ben gets an A because he followed instructions. Actually he gets extra points for including the touchy-feely phrases they're looking for. :-)

Vlorbik (6), Brenda (3, although she claims it's not her number), Steve (1), Carolyn (1, or is that just a comment on Steve's answer?), Doug (0), and Ken (6) all fail, because they didn't follow the instructions, which said to choose a number between 10 and 100.

(removing tongue from cheek)

Um, does anyone have any spare duct tape that I can wrap around my head to keep the brain matter from splattering all over the walls after my head explodes?

My special number is 6 -- because six is the number of weeks I'm going to lose doing this dopey project instead of beingtaught real math.

My special number is 0.

I chose this number because this assignment has 0 relationship to mathematics. In addition, this assignment has 0 pedagogical value, was worth precisely 0 time, and will have 0 impact on my grade.

Also, it's all round and stuff.

What horrifies me is the fact that this is a 6th grade project that takes 6 weeks.

Hey!

Maybe I should adopt 6 as my special number!

I love Ben's essay!

It's so cool I could almost think a Special Number project is a good idea! (The only bad part is 'it connects me to my world'!)

my special number, part 2

For those of you who've been wondering, as I did, what the Connected Mathematics curriculum's My Special Number project could possibly be trying to get at, I've posted a sample essay at the Official KTM My Special Number webpage. It's Ben's essay; he had it for a class project last week.

I still don't know what the point of the project was, but now at least I know what the result looks like.

Ben's exactly right; at the time he wrote the essay, it was exactly 48 months to his 16th birthday and the first legal opportunity he'll have to get his driver's license. I'm a bit alarmed that he's tracking it so precisely.
