brain foodI was Googling around for a good article on Younger Next Year (no luck so far), and came across a WAPO Q&A with Molly V. Wagster, Ph.D., Program Director for Neuropsychology of Aging research of the Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Md. Here's what she has to say about fish oil: Washington, D.C.: What is the value/correlation of Omega-3 fatty acid and is it a suggested part of the daily diet? Dr. Molly V. Wagster, Ph.D.: Consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as oily fish and walnuts, has been linked to protection against cognitive decline. There also are some studies in animals that have been genetically engineered to carry a gene for development of Alzheimer's disease that show that these animals show protection against the brain pathology of Alzheimer's disease when they are given omega-3 fatty acids. She also talks about research linking depression in one's younger years to Alzheimer's, which would go along with the observation that depression is connected to low levels of Omega 3s. Look here for syntax help. oily fish.... yech. -- CarolynJohnston - 03 Mar 2006 Yeah -- what else can I eat? I checked, and I'd have to eat like 20 avocados a day which seems a bit much... Any supplements that don't make you burp fish? -- StephanieO - 04 Mar 2006 Stephanie, I take 'enteric coated' fish oil capsules. They are encased in some heavy duty plastic coating so they don't open till they are past your stomach. I don't know if they're doing me any good, but I definitely don't burp fish. -- CarolynJohnston - 04 Mar 2006 Thanks for the tip, Carolyn. I'm pregnant and my midwife recommended taking omega-3 capsules, but since I burp all the time (lovely pregnancy symptom, isn't it?), I'm wary of fishy burps. I'll give the enteric coated stuff a try! -- StephanieO - 04 Mar 2006 Carolyn where do you get them?? The new Omegabrites formulation seems to be making me nauseous. (I think they changed the ratio of DHA to EPA - more EPA). Stephanie Have you tried neuromins? Those are the ones they use for formula.....and they're probably the best for pregnancy (DHA is 'structural' Omega 3; it's the stuff in cell membranes. EPA is the stuff that circulates in the blood.) -- CatherineJohnson - 08 Mar 2006 Stephanie -- I got them at Costco! No fish burps. Although I note that sometimes my fingers smell a bit fishy. -- CarolynJohnston - 08 Mar 2006
