carolyn googles ms rothSince Catherine no longer checks her email, I figure I need to post this here so she'll see it. I just couldn't believe that noone in Irvington is reading this blog with all its juicy Irvington tidbits. How could they miss it? Surely Ms Roth is reading this blog every night and vowing hideous revenge. So I checked the most likely avenue for approach -- Google -- to see if the name "Ms Roth" brings one to our door. The answer is no, it doesn't. But the good news is that Ms. Roths are everywhere! Here's a selection from Google:The Carrier-Roth debate: Is there a Secular Case Against Abortion? Ms. Roth says yes. I DO TOO READ MY EMAIL! -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 Hey! Try Googling Mrs. Roth! -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 There are a BILLION grade school teachers named Mrs. Roth! That's just about the only kind of Mrs. Roth there is! -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 So today Christopher came home and said the teacher's pet, the girl who gave him the finger yesterday, kicked him today. The kids are calling him 'traitor.' Then they told him, "Mrs. Roth seems a lot happier without you in the class." Christopher said, "That's because my mom gets on her case." I'm starting to feel sorry for Mrs. Roth. Especially now that her former colleague told me she was always a very nice woman; no problems at all. Of course, I'm also thinking, oh fine. She has to go Sprong the minute she meets my kid. We just keep beating the odds around here! -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I can't say Christopher sounds especially confident about his performance on today's test. Basically, unless he thinks he aced something (which he doesn't) it's usually not good news. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 Ben's judgment is whacked when it comes to how he did on a test. -- CarolynJohnston - 20 Dec 2005 ![]() -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 Ben can't tell at all? Can you tell from what he says? I'm traumatized, because on the 'D+' test, Christopher said it 'wasn't too bad,' or something like that, and he sounded uncertain when he said it. (Which makes sense, because in fact he somewhat knew the material; he just didn't know any of it to mastery, and couldn't do it on a plug-and-chug exam.) He doesn't sound quite as uncertain today, so I'm praying for a C. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 As opposed to a freaking D+ -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I just couldn't believe that noone in Irvington is reading this blog with all its juicy Irvington tidbits. How could they miss it? Easy. There are no direct links to "kitchentablemath" from google. KTM is a google free zone. -- KDeRosa - 20 Dec 2005 Meanwhile, I'm doomed. I found this fabulous Fractions series at EPS. I already had the first book, which I'd forgotten about; then when I got it out I realized it was PERFECT. The book teaches ONLY FRACTIONS, and teaches ONLY FRACTIONS on pristine white pages you can read, with each concept accompanied by drill AND THREE APPROPRIATE WORD PROBLEMS JUST LIKE KUMON. So I ordered the next book in the series. It's out of print. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 Easy. There are no direct links to "kitchentablemath" from google. KTM is a google free zone. I signed us up with Google and with everything else under the sun. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 We're still not there. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 We're on Yahoo, though. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I think. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 Easy. There are no direct links to "kitchentablemath" from google. KTM is a google free zone. I think I figured out why that is. It's apparently because googles indexes off of page titles, and our page title not only doesn't contain keywords, it doesn't even have 'kitchentablemath' in it. -- CarolynJohnston - 20 Dec 2005 I tried to fix that and I couldn't. -- CarolynJohnston - 20 Dec 2005 sheesh I was Googling 'constructivist math' to see if Kitchen Table Math came up (answer: no) and I found this:
-- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 hey we should tell potential trolls what happened to Mrs. Roth A perfectly normal woman with an excellent reputation. Sucked into the orbit of the Berenson-Johnson household and WHAP. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I think I figured out why that is. It's apparently because googles indexes off of page titles, and our page title not only doesn't contain keywords, it doesn't even have 'kitchentablemath' in it. but, but.....don't they do something called 'crawling'? like spiders? -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 It's TWIN PEAKS around here. -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I thought for sure I'd get a google whack with "mrs. roth irvington retard" -- KDeRosa - 20 Dec 2005 ![]() -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I thought for sure I'd get a google whack with "mrs. roth irvington retard" oh, gosh, KEN you're awful -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I'm gonna go try -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I've exceeded ruthless -- KDeRosa - 20 Dec 2005 here's what I got for "Mrs. Roth" Irvington retarded (It's retardED. What were the actual scores? We might as well approach this rigorously. Well, as rigorously as a test of unknown origin and doubtful veracity found on the internet will allow, anyway. -- DougSundseth - 20 Dec 2005 Heck, that's probably more rigorous than most education studies. -- DougSundseth - 20 Dec 2005 I might have to retake the test, I don't think I recorded my actual scores. Update: William wallace: You scored 81 Wisdom, 65 Tactics, 68 Guts, and 72 Ruthlessness! and You scored higher than 95% on Unorthodox You scored higher than 35% on Tactics You scored higher than 89% on Guts You scored higher than 97% on Ruthlessness Bring it on. -- KDeRosa - 20 Dec 2005 That's within the margin of error. no -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 ken, dear ruthless is genetic it's something you're born with you can't get more of it by working hard and taking the test again I am an 80 you are a 72 those are the facts you have many other fine qualities -- CatherineJohnson - 20 Dec 2005 I'm playing nice the rest of this afternoon, keeping rhetorical knives in a completely different room from metaphorical kidneys. I'll be ruthless again tomorrow. But I'll try to hide that here. -- DougSundseth - 20 Dec 2005 good -- CatherineJohnson - 21 Dec 2005 Ok, I didn't want to have to bring this up but these ruthless rankings are gender based, so whereas my 72 is a William Wallace, your 80 is more this speed ...
-- KDeRosa - 21 Dec 2005
On Christopher and the meanie kids he goes to school with... Have you talked with him about strategies to use with the kids? Like good comebacks to use? I hope at least that he knows for certain that they are wrong and he is right, and that they're saying that stuff because they're insecure (and kids are vicious by nature). I hope he's not taking any of their #$%@! to heart. Ok, that's an impossible goal. But still, I hope they're not able to continue wounding him. -- StephanieO - 21 Dec 2005 IMHO, the best way to explain the facts of life to a vicious bully is an accidental right cross to the jaw. But again that's just MHO. -- VerghisKoshi - 21 Dec 2005 "I thought for sure I'd get a google whack with "mrs. roth irvington retard"" Hmm, I guess they don't do regular expressions. Probably too expensive. -- VerghisKoshi - 21 Dec 2005 -- CatherineJohnson - 21 Dec 2005 little Rhoda can take William Wallace -- CatherineJohnson - 21 Dec 2005 Stephanie These kids are his friends! (Some of them.) I think at this point it's probably OK.....middle schoolers tease and taunt each other all day; it's a horror. I completely disapprove of the whole concept of middle school at this point. When parents tell me kids 'need the socialization' I have to FORCE myself not to be rude and dismissive. Right. Pre-teens needs to spend 6 hours a day in the company of other pre-teens. Unsupervised. So basically, I think that the Mrs. Roth situation has become the New Focus Of Teasing; at least I hope so. We went through a bullying situation in 2nd grade and got it settled down rapidly, after the neighbor dad taught Christopher how to fight. He may need a refresher course, however. -- CatherineJohnson - 21 Dec 2005 Little Rhoda can take anyone. But as we learned, she can't help her little self. I'd stay off docks on a lake, just in case. -- SusanS - 21 Dec 2005 Time for me to read Linda Perlstein— ![]() -- CatherineJohnson - 21 Dec 2005 Apparently, there are only 4 days left til Christmas. Love, Your anonymous Google Master -- KtmGuest - 21 Dec 2005 ktm guest oh my gosh unbelievable I'm in awe -- CatherineJohnson - 21 Dec 2005 Googlemaster cheated. The question wasn't whether we could Google Mrs. Roth, the question was could you google Mrs. Roth and wind up at KTM. And BTW, ratemyteacher is great, kids are so heartless. -- KDeRosa - 21 Dec 2005 More Googling, now that we know her first name. Gaaaaah, she was on the committees to develop both the math [pdf] and ELA curricula for Irvington. The Arts thing [pdf] isn't very interesting, but pity the poor kid whose parents won Mrs. Roth's prize in the silent auction [pdf] -- a night on the town with Mrs. Roth! Oh look, we're going on a Habitat Adventure. I will assume she's not the author of the children's books THE PRETENDER PRINCESS and HIS MAJESTY THE FROG. ... Oh right, I forget we were supposed to end up at KTM. No, didn't find any links back to KTM. ... Don't forget to show Christopher the Rate My Teacher page. I'm sure he'll have something to contribute. (evil grin) -- KtmGuest - 21 Dec 2005 "Googlemaster cheated. The question wasn't whether we could Google Mrs. Roth, the question was could you google Mrs. Roth and wind up at KTM." But, Ken, googlemaster at least came up with a link to OUR Ms Roth, as opposed to Ms Roth the brain surgeon or squid researcher or first violinist. -- CarolynJohnston - 21 Dec 2005 True enough. -- KDeRosa - 21 Dec 2005 That ratemyteacher is hilarious. I wouldn't normally trust kids to rate their classes in middle school, but sometimes a common thread starts to peek through. -- SusanS - 21 Dec 2005 Speaking of google, I just found a comparison between Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, 1963 vs 1991 editions. Note all the silly PC textbook-like changes -- KDeRosa - 21 Dec 2005

Lily Bunny sings: "Come and take a walk with me 'cause it's a counting day. We'll take a walk and count the things we pass along the way. Tra la la, one, two, three, come and take a walk with me." or something like that. I loved Richard Scarry videos. Does anyone remember the Mrs. Phipps and Snoothy video for phonics? -- SteveH - 22 Dec 2005 KtM? is in google: http://www.google.com/search?as_q=math&num=100&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=kitchentablemath.net&as_rights=&safe=off But there's not much there, which is very strange. Could Twiki have some google issues? How many hits are y'all getting from search engines? -- JeffBoulier - 22 Dec 2005 In the page header one of the meta tags is a robots no-index. That's (at least part of) why it isn't appearing in google. -- RudbeckiaHirta - 22 Dec 2005 Carolyn said the other day that there are Twiki issues with Google.... What is a 'robots no-index'? If that's too involved to answer, don't bother... -- CatherineJohnson - 22 Dec 2005 It tells the robots (spiders, programs that trawl the web looking for pages to index) not to index the page. And if every page has it, then no none of them will be indexed. -- KtmGuest - 22 Dec 2005 Why would Twiki put a robots no-index message in the top line???? -- CatherineJohnson - 22 Dec 2005 sheesh -- CatherineJohnson - 22 Dec 2005
