The person who believes in constructionist approaches to math may be interested to learn that recent breakthroughs related to neuroimaging and learning are pointing towards the importance of automaticity in order to learn a subject well. In other words, you can "understand" how the chords work on your guitar, but to be able to play the guitar well, you have to have that automaticity of basic concepts that comes with practice. My daughter, who is in Chile now as an exchange student for her last year of high school, is telling me she's interested in a career involving math, because she likes it and everyone tells her how good she is at it. She wasn't one of those natural math whiz kids. It's just that the every day practice, (never too easy, never too hard) that she got over the years with Kumon made an enormous difference. -- BarbOakley - 24 Oct 2005
