Mathman on practicefrom mathman:So how many exercises should I assign? I can't possibly grade them all. This is not an easy question to answer. It's much easier to say how many exercises the student should do although most students won't care for what I have to say. The student should work as many exercises as it takes to be able to do them correctly most of the time as fast as he can physically write out a complete solution. When informed that he has made a mistake, he should be able to find and correct his error quickly. When it counts, given time to review his work carefully, he should be able come up with the correct solution every time. This level of mastery opens the door to calculus, differential equations, linear algebra and the quantitative elements of any science. I'm going to print this out, ask Christopher to read it out loud to me, and then post it above the dining room table. (We're still waiting on delivery of the Ikea desk I ordered a couple of week ago.)
