productivity questions

I'm being so productive today that naturally I got surfing the web looking at websites about productivity

Which led me to 3 things:

  • Quicksilver this appears to be a staggeringly productivity-enhanding "app" for Mac users that will change my life

gtd-php is the thing I'm really interested in, so here's my question:

Am I likely to have and/or be using already MySQL and Apache?

And how would I know?

This is supposed to be a 'Getting Things Done Lite' website for people who feel overwhelmed by the prospect of going whole hog.

Doesn't seem all that lite to me at the moment, but maybe I'm wrong.

Gantt charts & PERT charts; also some reputedly cool software for drawing Gantt charts on Macs

(I'm assuming you mean the Apache web server. The Apache group produces a lot of software.)

What version of Mac OS are you running?

If you are on Mac OS 9.x, the chances are high that you DO NOT have either MySQL? or Apache installed on your computer.

If you are on Mac OS X (10.x.y), the chances are probably about medium that you have either one, depending on what else you've got running. If you've installed a lot of third party software, you might have MySQL? already going, but you're most likely not going to have Apache unless you're running a web server from your Mac.

If you're running OS X, then open a Terminal window and type:

rpm -aV | grep -i "mysql\|apache"
That will list all package installed with the RPM Package Manager that contain either "mysql" or "apache" in the name (case insensitive).

Of course, the software could be installed via a means other than RPM...

To find out if you have Apache, go to:

System Preferences

Under "Internet and Network" there should be one called "Sharing."

From the Sharing preference, if you have the option to turn on "Personal Web Sharing," then you have Apache installed. Probably if you have Tiger, then you should have it.

On my office computer, I had to put files in a different place than the documentation said to. For the computer itself to have web pages (that is, for http://machinename.local/ ), I had to put them in Library/WebServer/Documents . But for me to have web pages on my computer (that is, for http://machinename.local/~myaccount ), I could put them in ~/Sites .

Catherine, glad you asked! ;-)

You are unlikely to have either Apache or MySQL on your Mac. Apache is webserver software -- I have it on my machine because my computer runs a testbed for this blog (so I can make sure I don't break the real one). MySQL is an open source database -- most PC users don't need a database so you won't have one by default on your computer.

So, I think maybe that GTD software is more than you need. Plus if you got that deeply into it you would become all obsessed with open source software and computer education, and then where would we ktmers be?

Don't worry.

I have a Top Secret Plan NOT to become obsessed with open source software.

Seriously.

I can't promise the same about the World Handwriting Contest, however.

I had my choice of a 12-inch Time Timer, an 8-inch Time Timer, and a 3-inch Time Timer.

I selected an 8-inch Time Timer.

HEY CAROLYN!

AND ALL YOU MATH BRAINS!

PRESIDENT BUSH HAS MONEY FOR YOU!

-- CatherineJohnson - 02 Feb 2006

I was disappointed he doesn't seem to want to throw money at aspiring middle school math teachers.

This is hilarious — from eduwonk:

Afterthought: Eduwonk guesses that the “Harry and Louise ads” of health care fame were the inspiration for the "John" and "Michelle" back and forth format but it's already tiresome because every post more or less boils down to something like this:

Michelle: NCLB requires this provision or that or could lead to this outcome or that…
John: I’m frightened…hold me…

I love it when Centrists get nasty.

Where did you get a time-timer? Did you actually go to a store and get it?

I SO want a time-timer. It would be great for Ben. I think.

-- CarolynJohnston - 02 Feb 2006

I saw the Time Timers when you posted about them previously, and I visited the website, but I still don't understand the purpose of a Time Timer. ???

-- GoogleMaster - 02 Feb 2006

hey!

why don't I finally do my Time Timer post!

-- CatherineJohnson - 02 Feb 2006

Time Timers to order

-- CatherineJohnson - 02 Feb 2006

So, aside from the big red background and the 5x to 8x price, how is that Time Timer different from your everyday analog kitchen timer?

-- GoogleMaster - 02 Feb 2006

It's exactly the same principle.

AND IT COSTS A WHOLE LOT MORE!

-- CatherineJohnson - 02 Feb 2006

THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT SUPER-GOOD FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS!

-- CatherineJohnson - 02 Feb 2006

Actually, I suspect that the 'graphics' of the Time Timer work better as an 'instructional device' than the graphics of a kitchen timer.

I've used those kitchen timers for years.....without any noticeable improvement in time comprehension & management skills....

I bought a big honking 8" Time Timer, and I'm hoping the BLOOD RED DISAPPEARING DISK is going to make me get serious.

-- CatherineJohnson - 02 Feb 2006

We'll see.
