First of all, I may have forgotten to mention that Matt Goff's post about teaching algebra is linked in last week's Carnival of Education. I'm sending Smartest Tractor's material to this week's Carnival, and have managed to round it up. (I have a sinking feeling that Anne Dwyer material, which I plan to send in next week, is scattered to the four corners of ktm...) I have one question for Smartest Tractor (or anyone else): I don't understand her box and whisker chart, 'Algebra to date.' (pdf file)

His box-and-whisker plot was the class's marks up to that point in time. The mean for the unit was 79.3% and the standard deviation was 14.1. The median was 84.7. I will attach the unit test, based entirely on problems the students had for homework. -- SmartestTractor - 14 Feb 2006

Each plot represented a quiz taken by 31 students. There was fourteen lessons. We repeated one lesson due to a low class average. There was a review page on distribution and a review on the chapter. On the final box plot (that has not be uploaded), each assessment is represented. Why a box plot? A was messing around with SigmaPlot? and needed some numbers. -- SmartestTractor - 14 Feb 2006
